Throughout human history, gemstones have served as symbols of health, wealth, and the sacred. In the ancient world the 12 tribes of Israel were represented by 12 corresponding precious stones placed in the breast plate of the corresponding tribal high priests. In Revelations, John’s visions of the 12 foundations of a New Jerusalem – or sacred city – rest on layers of jasper, sapphire, chalcedony, emerald, sardonyx, sardius, chrysolyte, beryl, topaz, chrysoprasus, jacinth, and amethyst; and the power of stones were attributed to the power of God. The Romans carried cut stones to ward off sickness and bad luck.  The Egyptians polished and hammered stones into scarabs, symbols of creation and wore amulets made of amethyst, hematite, jasper, carnelian, and lapis lazuli.

The history of gemstones being used to heal or attune the human body is extensive.  5000 years ago in the East, Shen Nung, the “Red Emperor,” detailed descriptions of gemstones and their influence on the human body. In Eastern medicine minerals represent the Metal Element, the most organized and least dynamic of all the elements.  Crystals or gemstones represent Yuan Qi – the source – or, unadulterated energy of life.  They have a soul (or Ling), harmonize with different organs of the body and teach what they know to those that are able to attune to them.  In this way, gemstones are seen as sacred agents of spiritual change.

From a western perspective, minerals become crystals due to pressure and time squeezing and refining like minerals together within the layers of the earth (its molten core, solid core, mantel, and crust) or from meteorites striking the surface.  Each crystal contains an energy signature based on where and how it was formed, its mineral content, chemical impurities, rutilation (how things move through it), and it’s internal geometric molecular structure.

In our ongoing series we’ll look at the healing properties and influence that certain stones hold as sacred agents of change in our home and in our lives as well as how to maintain the influence of the energy signatures (or soul) through clearing, cleaning, charging, activating, attunement, and storing of crystals and gemstones.
